Type of artifact and special qualities

TYPE OF ARTIFACT:

Our object, the flyer, is made normally with the same material which the spinning wheel is made (our object, because it was the first type of spinning wheels that existed, is made of wood completely, except for the part that pulled of the wool, which is made of iron or lead.. However, actually there are many different types of flyers, such as of plastic, to make it more resistant.

SPECIAL QUALITIES OF THE ARTIFACT:

This artifact has a round shape, with a small peak at the bottom, whic after would be connected to the maidens and hte stool to be suportted and to obtain the neccesary wool. It has also a flyer whorl that is attached to the round part of the flyer, which is attached to the belt and the wheels and make the flyer turn. When the flyer turn, its function is to pass the wool through the that has on its top, and transported to the wheel, where the main process is made. We can say that our artifact plays a very important role in the most early part of the process, storing and then transporting the wool with all its attached accesories. It's not very big or heay because needs to be maintained on the top of the spinning wheel and also is better to be small so that the wool can be transported from one part to the other quicker. Its only movable parts are the flyer whorl, explained before why it need to move in circles so that the wool can make its way through. There' not any inscription or writting that we can observe.

The "rueca" or spinning wheel is a tool used in the past to make thin cords with your own hands. It had the shape of a wheel and it was usually made of wood or steel. This is composed of various parts. which one of the parts is the object that we were investigating:

     A.  Wheel: Is what turns when you pedaland it makes the other parts work.
     B.   Belt: Cord that sorrounds the wheel and the flyer whorl.
     C.   Flyer: This is our investigation object. It's a tool that has an U shape with hooks in each of his
            extremities.
     D.   Flyer whorl: It's a pulley that it's attached to the flyer and it's moved by the belt.
     E.   Maidens: Sticks that support the flyer and the spool.
     F.   Mother-Of-All: A long bar where all the upper elements are hold.
     G.   Tension switch: It's function is to regulate the tension of the cords.
     H.   Stool: It stores the wool before being used and spins because of the flyer.
     I.     Pedal: Spins the wheel.
     J.     Footman: Bar tha connects the pedals and the wheel anc by this connection when the pedals are
            pinned the wheel spins.
     K.   Hole: Is the name given to the hole that has the flyer so that the wool coul get through.

First Impressions and investigation
When we first saw the photo of our objects, there were many different opinions, we were pretty sure that it was a drill, (although I was quite confident about it being a torture device), we started from that point, and gooogled: "ancient drills" there were some pictures which looked similar, but still our object still looked different. Then we realised why was it different, ours had a hole at the bottom, and we were so tired we left it there. Later, we continued investigating, we were observing other posibilities (including the one of the torture device), but then we, casually, found an image of an ancient spinning wheel, and realised that our object, was a piece of it, it was not exactly the same, but now the bit of the hole made sense. We looked for more images, because we couldn't fing in the spinning wheel the handle, so when we find one which was exactly the same, we got excited. We found that it was a piece of the machine called flyer.

After a long investigation about what  this mysterious tool could be and with the colaboration of our teacher, we managed to discover that this tool was part of an ancient seewing machine. This is only a small part of the original machine (called "Rueca" in spanish)  and it was used to make thin strings out of bare wool.

In my free time I often hang out with my friends. We are 6 members in this group including me. In my opinion, it could be a rustic drill or saw. We'll continue investigating and we'll do what we can.
